Anna University, Chennai is the affiliating technical university for engineering, technology, management and pharmacy colleges across Tamil Nadu — one of the largest such affiliations in the country, spanning constituent, affiliated and autonomous colleges organised into regional zones (Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli and Tirunelveli). A single result release, run through the Controller of Examinations, therefore reaches students across the whole state at once.

What "semester result" means here

Anna University runs on a strict odd/even semester cycle: odd-semester exams (Nov–Dec) and even-semester exams (Apr–May), each followed by a result a few weeks later on the COE portal. Regular results, arrear results and revaluation results are published as separate rounds, often weeks apart — the most common reason a student can't find "their" result is that they're looking at the wrong round rather than the wrong date.

For the great majority of students, who study at an affiliated college rather than the university's own department, the result on the portal and the marksheet from your college are two separate things, issued at different times. Both matter — the portal result is provisional, the college-issued marksheet is the document you'll actually submit for admissions, placements or a semester abroad.

How to check

  1. Open coe1.annauniv.edu and find the results link for your regulation and semester (Anna University has run multiple curriculum regulations over the years — 2017, 2021, 2023 — and results are filed under the regulation you're registered on).
  2. Enter your registration number and date of birth exactly as they appear on your hall ticket.
  3. If nothing appears, check whether you're looking at the regular result or the arrear/supplementary list — they're published separately.
  4. Save the PDF immediately; result-day traffic on COE is heavy and the portal slows.

Retotalling and revaluation — pick deliberately

Anna University runs both processes, and they are not the same thing:

  • Retotalling checks that your marks were added and entered correctly. It's faster and cheaper, and it cannot make a mark go down.
  • Revaluation sends your answer script to another examiner for a fresh assessment. It costs more per paper and can move your mark up or down, so apply only where you have a genuine reason to think the script was misjudged, not just short of a grade boundary.

Both open for a short window after each result and are applied for through the COE portal, paper-by-paper, with results typically out a few weeks later. Missing the window means waiting for the next examination cycle.

Arrears — plan the sequence, not just the exam

If a paper doesn't clear, the arrear exam is usually offered alongside the next regular semester's exam for that subject. Two things catch students out:

  • Registration deadlines for arrears are separate from your regular semester registration, and are announced through your college — miss it and you carry the paper another full cycle.
  • Some programmes cap the number of standing arrears allowed before you can progress to the next semester or year. Check this with your department early, not after you've already fallen behind on more than one paper.

Before you rely on any of this

We publish result status and official links — we are not Anna University, and we cannot look up, alter or re-check a result. Regulation-wise curriculum rules, revaluation fees and timelines, and arrear-carry limits are set by the university and its affiliated colleges, and they do change between regulations. Confirm the current position on the COE portal or with your college examination cell.

If anything here is out of date, tell us — corrections jump the queue.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my Anna University result?
Open the results section on coe1.annauniv.edu, choose your course and semester, and enter your roll number / enrolment number. Keep a printout or PDF — the official marksheet is issued separately by your college.
Where do back / arrear paper results appear?
Arrear (back paper) results are usually published separately from the main semester result, a few weeks later, on the same portal — check under the supplementary or special-exam notices rather than the regular semester list.
How does revaluation differ from retotalling at Anna University?
Retotalling rechecks that marks were added and transcribed correctly. Revaluation sends the script back for a fresh look by an examiner. Both are applied for separately on the COE portal within the window announced after each result, with a fee per paper, and a revaluation mark can move in either direction.
