UPSSSC PET — the Preliminary Eligibility Test — is run by the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission as a single screening gate in front of most of its Group C recruitments. Understanding what the PET score actually is changes how you should treat this result, and a lot of candidates get it wrong.
PET is a gate, not a recruitment
You do not get a job from PET. You get a score and a rank that make you eligible to apply when UPSSSC advertises an actual vacancy, and the commission then shortlists from PET scores down to a cut-off for that specific recruitment.
That has one consequence worth internalising: there is no single "PET cut-off". The qualifying line is set per recruitment, based on the vacancies and the applicant pool for that post. A score that clears comfortably for one advertisement may fall short for another in the same year.
So the useful question is not "did I pass PET" — it is "where does my score sit relative to the posts I intend to apply for".
Your score has a validity period
This is the part that catches people. A PET score is valid for a defined period from the result, and everything you do next should be planned inside that window:
- Note the expiry the day the result appears.
- Track UPSSSC advertisements across the whole window — the score is only useful if a suitable vacancy is advertised while it is live.
- If the window is closing and your score is marginal, plan to re-sit before it lapses, not after.
PET is held annually, and you may sit it again to improve your score. Candidates who treat the result as an achievement to file away, rather than a clock that has started, lose the value of it.
How to check your result
- Open upsssc.gov.in and find the PET result or scorecard link.
- Enter your registration number and date of birth, as used in your application.
- Download the scorecard PDF and save your own copy — you will be referencing it every time a vacancy opens.
- Note both your normalised score and your rank.
Normalisation, and why your raw marks may not match
PET is conducted in multiple shifts, and scores are normalised to account for differences in difficulty between them. Your final score may therefore differ from the raw total you calculated against the answer key.
This is normal and it is not an error. If you want to challenge something, the mechanism is the objection window against the answer key, which opens before results and closes quickly — not a complaint after the score is published.
What to do while the score is live
- Read the eligibility clause of each advertisement, not just the cut-off chatter. Posts have their own age, qualification and experience requirements independent of PET.
- Keep your documents current — domicile, category and EWS certificates have their own validity rules, and an expired certificate at verification is a common, avoidable rejection.
- Apply broadly within your eligibility. Because the cut-off is per recruitment, a score that looks unremarkable can still clear for a less-contested post.
Before you rely on any of this
We publish result status and official links — we are not UPSSSC, and we cannot retrieve, alter or re-check an individual result. Score validity, normalisation method, and the eligibility and cut-off for any particular recruitment are set by the commission and change between cycles. Confirm the current position in the official advertisement you are applying under.
If something here is out of date, tell us — corrections jump the queue.
